Bathroom SUPER-GRAPHIC
The supergraphic was a design assignment to install in our chosen location at Roski. My partner and I chose the women's restroom, with the hopes of bringing something fun and exciting to a normally drab small space. The final installation ended up opening the room and made it much more inviting.
Inflatables Project
The inflatables project was a fun challenge of figuring out how to size up a paper model into a giant inflatable object made of trash bags. My partner and I choose to make The Very Hungry Caterpillar from Eric Carle's children's book, partly motivated by our nostalgia for the story, but also the interesting paradox of seeing a giant caterpillar made of trash bags that a viewer could walk under. We wanted people to be able to interact with it in a way that activated whatever space it was in.
Grow Strong
This piece incorperated levels of dimensionality within the work as well as the theme while keeping it in the context of a painting. It aims to seamlessly blend 2D and 3D artistic approaches. The shape is a remodeled African symbol for strength, Dwennimmen, which symbolizes that even the strong have to also be humble. It involved introspection about where I draw my own strength as well as what this idea truly means. There is much more dimensionality to it than what American culture idealizes. It's glorification of strength and its connection to masculinity has become toxic and distorted. I find strength in vulnerability and empathy, and I believe we all find our strength in different ways. Strength allows growth and growth allows strength and this is all mediated by nature.
Miniatures
Initially created for Japan House LA's tiny architect competition, I enjoyed exploring spaces with a "miniature mindset" and imagining the possibility ordinary objects hold. I hand sculpted the mini-figures to correspond with the spaces and scenes I discovered.
